What the car has been telling you
The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been building for some time:
- power falling off, above all going uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they used to
- fuel economy getting worse
- stop/start without a word giving up
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
None of that is evidence by itself. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.
