Mobile Catalytic Converter Cleaning

A catalytic converter cleaned on the vehicle

Catalytic converter cleaning is done at the motor.

A technician drives out to your home or workplace, cleans the converter with a chemical treatment while it is even then on the car, and leaves you with the identical unit you arrived with.

It lasts 1-2 hours, starts from £299, and the figure is fixed on the phone before anyone sets off.

What P0420 generally means

P0420 is a catalyst efficiency code.

The oxygen sensors flanking the unit are telling the ECU that it is not achieving enough, and the carbon, soot and fluid contaminants in the honeycomb are a usual explanation behind it.

It is not the only explanation.

A failed sensor registers the same way to the ECU, and so will an exhaust leak before it. That is why the visit opens with a test rather than with cleaning.

Symptoms worth taking notice of

  • sluggish acceleration and noticeable power loss
  • the check engine light, usually code P0420
  • a sulphur or rotten-egg odour from the exhaust
  • knocking noises
  • noticeable heat under the floorpan

The rattle is the one to act on promptly.

A converter whose honeycomb has broken up is a structural problem, not a contamination issue, and cleaning will not repair it.

How the clean goes

A backpressure test happens first. A reading above 3 PSI usually suggests a heavy clog, and an infrared temperature reading measuring the inlet with the outlet says whether the converter is working as it should.

Then the clean itself: a chemical treatment through the exhaust that lifts the carbon, soot and fluid contaminants from the honeycomb and recovers the flow through it.

The converter sits bolted to the vehicle the whole time.

Afterwards the readings are done again, so the before and after are on record rather than a matter of judgement.

When treatment is not the solution

A clean recovers a contaminated converter. It does no good for one that has melted inside, and no good for the failures that produce the same code — a broken oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, or an engine still running badly enough to keep contaminating whatever is fitted.

Where the scan says the converter is too far for cleaning, you are warned before any work starts rather than after you have paid.

What it comes to

A clean starts from £299. A call-out charge covers every visit and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that comes with it.

The car and your address both move the price, so the price is agreed on the phone rather than published as a flat rate.

If the test says treatment will not work, you are not asked to pay for a clean.

The call-out charge nonetheless stands, because the visit, the scan and the advice have taken place.

The clean includes a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare.

Where we travel, and on what

Private cars, panel vans and light commercials, on most petrol and diesel engines.

The converter is done on the vehicle at your address or work, any place the motor can wait for a couple of hours.

Coverage is UK-wide. An off-car option is offered as well, with courier pickup and return, done in 1-2 days — worth bearing in mind if the car will not start.

An engineer working on a catalytic converter at the roadside

Good job. Nat was very professional and thorough. Explained in detail what he had done, and gave me advice for the future. Would use them again (but hope not to need to!).

Phil C.

Great service from Nic. Arrived on time and dealt with the blocked DPF in my Mazda 6 2.2 diesel with ease. I received a clear report with advisories for my local garage to deal with, plus excellent advice to avoid further issues. Highly recommended.

Keith E.

Professional, friendly and fast service. Daz done really good job. My car is now running smoothly and all power back with DPF cleaned and all faults erased. Thank you!
