Symptoms have usually been building for a while before the light even appears. Last news, in other words:
- power dropping away, particularly pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- the fuel consumption is down
- the stop/start without a word bowing out
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the box
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. The light alongside them indicates a full filter.
