Signs the motor has been giving you
Symptoms have generally been growing for weeks before the light even arrives. Belated news, in other words:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- the fuel economy is down
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. The light with them suggests a loaded filter.
The reason diesel particulate filters block near Turin
For a DPF, the worst motoring is the sort you get around an area such as Turin. The school run to the local primary school, Turin Cottages at a standstill at the morning rush, ten minutes to Tesco, the hop to Arbroath — none of it runs long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is replaced: the filter you own is cleared where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it hollowed out a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth noting.
