What the car has been telling you
Symptoms have usually been mounting for some time before the light so much as arrives. Belated news, in other words:

- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. Next to the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
