Stone Heath, Staffordshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The car sits in place — on-site DPF cleaning travels to it. No workshop, no filter coming off. A fitter comes to your door in Stone Heath, clears the diesel particulate filter in place, performs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you started with.

You'll have a figure by phone before anyone goes, the clean opening from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.

The light is showing and the car is down on power — that is how we normally come across people, and roughly what this page covers.

What to do when the DPF light is on

The unit is not automatically what is at fault, and that comes first. Treatment is not where a visit opens. A scan is — several faults appear as the same light.

Second thing: how you run it between now and then counts.

  • Amber light, car even now driving as normal — a long constant run can even now sort it alone. Costs zero, and worth a try before you ring anything.
  • Once the vehicle is in limp mode, motoring will not touch it. The window has gone.
  • Stop planning long drives and get it looked at if the car smells of diesel or there is black smoke when you press on.

Signs the motor has been sending you

Last news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for weeks before it arrives:

  • less power, above all going uphill
  • the revs no longer climb the way they used to
  • worse fuel economy
  • stop/start silently packing in
  • smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car

That is not proof on its own. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.

The reason diesel particulate filters choke round Stone Heath

For a DPF, the worst use is the sort you get across a rural hamlet such as Stone Heath. A regeneration takes long enough and heat, and gets not much: not on the school run to Green Lea First School, not on Milwich Heath Road at half past eight, not on a few minutes to Tean Co-Op, and not on the run to Blythe Bridge. What should burn off remains.

The map does not help either. The M6 is under 10 miles from Stone Heath and Stoke-on-Trent is under 10 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way routinely, entire weeks go by without the sustained run that could empty the filter by itself.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration gives out

The motor is protecting itself, which is what limp mode means. With output limited and the revs held, the regeneration the filter requires will not complete at all. That tells, because starting one is exactly what a sustained run does.

Sound advice, that motorway run — right up until the moment it is not. The filter needs treatment rather than road work once the vehicle has slipped into limp mode.

DPF cleaning at the vehicle across Stone Heath

Most drivers do not anticipate this bit: the filter stays put. The job takes place with the DPF still bolted to the vehicle — on your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can sit for a few hours.

Nothing is cleaned until other faults are cleared. That means a check first: live data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a look over of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and connected hardware.

Then the cleaning. A solution goes in through the access port on that car and spreads inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never shift. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to take doing twice.

A regeneration comes next, burning off what the clean has lifted. Stay with the motor and it is done as a monitored drive out of Stone Heath. Drop it and the regeneration is done in place, with live data checked once it is done.

Finally the check runs again — the change confirmed, the light cleared, anything still showing noted. Both sets of figures reach you by email, so the numbers are kept.

When a DPF clean is not the fix

A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing a clean answers. It will not touch:

  • the wrong reading from a temperature or pressure sensor
  • an EGR valve held open
  • a problem in the AdBlue system
  • a regeneration that simply never starts, because of glow plugs or injectors
  • the turbo pushing oil into the filter

Which is why the check comes first. If it is found to be one of those, you are let know before any work begins rather than after you have paid for it.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no remedy. What gets searched for as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into service.

DPF cleaning charges around Stone Heath

The cleaning opens from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that comes with it.

No single flat rate would be honest, so the price is settled by the phone once we know the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. What you own and where you are both change it: Stone Heath itself, over at Wheatlow Brooks, or further out across the ST postcode area.

You are not asked to pay for cleaning that the diagnostic says will not work. The call-out charge nonetheless stands, because the visit, the check and the advice have happened.

The work comes with a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer heading back out to Stone Heath if the light comes back inside that period.

Vehicles we clean, and where we travel around Stone Heath

The one mobile service covers private cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery and agricultural machinery, and on every one the filter is done on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.

The same trip that puts engineers on Milwich Heath Road most weeks covers Stone Heath, Wheatlow Brooks, Summerhill and the places beyond Hilderstone. Farther out through Staffordshire is even so worth a call — coverage reaches UK-wide, and it is the diary rather than the distance that settles between today and tomorrow.

What Stone Heath drivers wonder about DPF cleaning

Can I just take it for a long drive?
If you get it in time, and the car is not in limp mode, sometimes. A steady run at motorway speed is what it takes — not ten minutes flat to Tean Co-Op and back.
How long does the visit last?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a heavily loaded filter can take cleaning twice, which takes longer.
The cost around Stone Heath — what is it?
Treatment opens from £299, and the call-out charge on top covers the visit, the check and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are move it, which is why settling it goes by phone.
Have I got to be around?
Somewhere for the motor to stand, for a couple of hours, is all that is required. Not you. The regeneration can be run as a supervised drive if you would sooner come along.
Coming to Stone Heath — how soon?
It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the calendar. Phone 0303 330 1830 and we will tell you what is available across the ST area.
The filter — does it come away from the vehicle?
Not on the on-site service — it is cleaned where it stands. Neither lifting a filter off nor putting one back on is work we do.
What if the light comes back?
Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to Stone Heath.
