St Cross, Hampshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

On-site DPF cleaning goes to the vehicle. A fitter arrives at your address over in St Cross, clears the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the vehicle, runs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you started with.

You'll be given a number by phone before anyone goes, the clean opening from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.

The light is showing and the vehicle is down on power — that is how we generally find people, and what this page deals with.

Your DPF light is lit — what now?

It could not be the DPF whatsoever. That is the opening thing. A diagnostic happens before any work, because that same dash light has a number of candidate faults behind it.

How the motor is handled in the meantime matters too.

  • A long even run may still do it, provided the light is amber and the motor goes normally. Costs nothing, so have a go at that before ringing.
  • Once the car is in limp mode, driving will not touch it. The window has gone.
  • A diesel smell in there, or black smoke under the throttle, is the point to stop planning long drives and ring.

The motor has been telling you already

Symptoms have usually been building for some time before the light so much as arrives. Belated news, in other words:

  • power dropping away, especially climbing uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not rise as before
  • worse fuel consumption
  • a stop/start that has meekly given up
  • diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox

Any one of those, taken by itself, is not conclusive. The light with them points at a loaded filter.

Blocked diesel particulate filters near St Cross, and the reason

St Cross is a residential suburb, and the motoring that goes with one is the poorest kind for a DPF. Not one bit of it lasts long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to St Faith's Church of England Primary School, St Cross Road barely moving at the morning rush, five minutes to Sainsbury's, the run to Winchester. Instead of burning away, the soot collects.

Unless you have a routine need to get out to the M3, under a mile from St Cross, or over to Winchester under a mile away, whole weeks go by without a long steady drive. Geography is no help.

Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration

It is self-protection: that is all limp mode amounts to. A sustained drive works by setting off a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode rules out: power limited, revs pinned, no regeneration available.

The usual advice — run it up the motorway — is sensible, right until it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are beyond that stage, and the filter needs cleaning rather than road work.

A clogged DPF treated in St Cross, Hampshire

The vehicle stays put for call-out DPF cleaning round St Cross

The filter does not leave it. That is the part most owners do not see coming: the job takes place with the DPF still fitted to the vehicle, on your drive, in a work car park, wherever the motor can sit for a while.

First a scan. Real-time ECU data, the soot load as a proportion and as a weight, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the associated hardware — all of it read before any of it is started.

Then the clean. A solution is injected through the access point on that vehicle and spreads inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. Where the filter is badly blocked, plan on a second pass.

What the clean has freed is then burned off by a regeneration. That is a monitored drive out of St Cross if you are along, or a static regeneration where the motor waits, with the running data read once done.

Then a second check, proving the change, clearing the warning light and noting anything still outstanding. Both reports are emailed over, so the before and after figures are kept.

When a DPF clean is not the answer

Cleaning answers one thing: a filter choked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:

  • a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a blockage that is not there
  • a failed EGR valve
  • the AdBlue system going wrong
  • a regeneration that simply never completes, because of glow plugs or injectors
  • the turbo passing oil into the filter

Which is why the scan comes first. Proving to be one of them means learning it before work starts, not after handing over anything.

DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is exchanged: the filter you own is cleared where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it cut out a solution, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth knowing.

Prices for DPF cleaning around St Cross

Cleaning opens from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it pays for the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.

The price is settled over the phone, once we know the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. No flat rate could be truthful. Where you are tells as much as what you drive: St Cross itself, The Close close by, or otherwise out within the SO postcode area.

If the diagnostic rules cleaning out, there is not a penny to pay for it. What nonetheless holds is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the check was done and the advice was offered.

If the light comes back inside that window, an engineer heads back out to St Cross — the clean comes with a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare.

The vehicles we clean and the area we cover near St Cross

The filter is done where it sits on all of them: cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant machinery, agricultural machinery. Nothing is taken anywhere.

Most weeks there is already someone on St Cross Road, so St Cross rarely means a detour, and The Close, Bar End and the spots past Compton come with it. Coverage reaches UK-wide, so farther out around Hampshire is even so worth a ring, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

Questions St Cross drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Does a long run clear it?
If you spot it early enough, and the vehicle is not in limp mode, sometimes. It wants a long run at motorway speed, not five minutes or so to Sainsbury's and back.
The visit runs how long?
Plan on typically around 2 hours — badly loaded filters sometimes need a second pass, which adds to it.
What does it come to across St Cross?
The call-out charge takes in the visit, the scan and the advice; cleaning itself begins from £299. Both the vehicle and where you are shift it, which is why settling it is done by phone.
Do I have to be around?
The motor wants a spot for two hours or so. You do not need to be in it. If you would prefer to come along, the regeneration can be done as a supervised drive instead.
How soon can someone travel to St Cross?
Depending on the schedule, often same-day or next-day is usual. Phone 0303 330 1830 what is open across the SO area.
Does the filter leave the vehicle?
Cleaned where it is, on this service, so no. Nor does getting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
The light returns — then what?
Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to St Cross.
