- Amber light, car still driving fine — a long steady run can yet shift it by itself. Costs zero, and worth trying before you call anything.
- Once the car is in limp mode, motoring will not shift it. The window has gone.
- Get it looked at rather than driving it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
The car has been warning you already
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been slipping for weeks. It is belated news:
- tailing off on power, especially uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- the stop/start without a word bowing out
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not proof by itself. The light beside them indicates a blocked filter.
The reason diesel particulate filters choke round Skea

And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your original filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
