- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has already gone.
- A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under the throttle, is the point to stop planning long drives and call.
The vehicle has been showing you already
Last news, the light. The symptoms generally build for a while before it appears:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- you see the revs fall short of where they always went
- fuel consumption going worse
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- the car smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
None of that is proof alone. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Ringshall

A couple more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter cut out is not a fix — a vehicle without a working DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.
