The car has been showing you already
The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have normally been growing for weeks:
- pulling uphill, the power drops away
- you see the revs stop short of where they used to go
- the fuel economy is worse
- the stop/start silently packing in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
By itself, none of that is evidence. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is on as well.
The reason diesel particulate filters block near Renfrew
