Pen-y-ffordd, Flintshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning
On-site DPF cleaning comes to the vehicle. Your vehicle will not be taken anywhere and the filter does not leave it. An engineer comes at your door in Pen-y-ffordd, treats the diesel particulate filter on the motor and carries out a DPF regeneration.
The visit takes typically around 2 hours, the clean begins from £299, and the number is agreed by the phone before anyone travels.
Most people find us with the light on already, and the motor down on power. That is the situation this page is meant for.
What to do when the DPF light shows
First thing: it is not always the DPF. That light can come from a number of faults, not only one, so the visit starts with a diagnostic and not with cleaning.
It matters what you do with the vehicle between now and the booking.
- Amber light, car yet driving fine — a long constant run can still sort it alone. Costs nothing, and worth trying before you book anything.
- That window has closed once the motor has slipped into limp mode. Motoring will not help now.
- Diesel smell in the cabin, or black smoke under acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it looked at.
Signs the car has been showing you
Symptoms have usually been growing for a while before the light ever shows. Last news, in other words:
- power falling off, particularly going uphill
- you see the revs stop short of where they once went
- worse fuel use
- without a word, the stop/start packs in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
That is not proof on its own. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Blocked diesel particulate filters around Pen-y-ffordd, and the why
Pen-y-ffordd is a coastal village, and the driving that comes with one is the worst type for a DPF. The school run to the local primary school, Maes Emlyn at a standstill at the morning rush, five minutes to Spar, the dash to Prestatyn — not one bit of it runs long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. The soot builds up rather than burning away.
The map does not help either. The Moreton Spur is under 10 miles from Pen-y-ffordd and St Asaph is under 10 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way routinely, entire weeks go by without the long steady run that might empty the filter by itself.
DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode ends it
Limp mode is the car defending itself. The whole catch is that a long drive works by setting off a regeneration, and once in limp mode the revs will not pull and power is held down.
The common advice — take it up the motorway — is good, up until it is not. Past that line — limp mode — road work will not be enough, and the filter needs cleaning.
Where the motor stands is where the DPF is cleaned across Pen-y-ffordd
The filter does not leave it. That is the detail most people do not see coming: the job is done with the DPF yet fitted to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, wherever the vehicle can wait for a while.
Nothing is touched until other faults are cleared. That requires a check first: live data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by weight, and a check of the sensor readings, glow plugs and related parts.
A cleaning solution next is fed in through the entry point on that vehicle, opening out inside the filter to loosen soot and ash a regeneration alone will never move. Badly blocked filters sometimes require a second pass.
Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has loosened. Either it goes as a monitored drive out of Pen-y-ffordd, with you present, or it runs where the vehicle waits and the running data is verified afterwards.
Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change confirmed, the light reset, anything still open noted. Both sets of figures arrive with you by email, so the numbers are recorded.
The faults a DPF clean cannot cure
One thing is what treatment fixes — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- a pressure sensor reporting a restriction that is not there
- the EGR valve jammed open
- a problem in the AdBlue system
- injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration starting at all
- the turbo putting oil into the filter
That is what the first scan is for. Where it turns out to be one of those, you are told before any work gets going rather than after you have handed over a penny.
Two more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a functioning DPF fails its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is cleaned in place and returned into use.
DPF cleaning costs around Pen-y-ffordd
A call-out charge applies whatever the outcome, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the scan and the advice passed on. Treatment itself starts from £299.
No flat rate would be honest, so the price is agreed on the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. Two things change it: what you own, and where you are — Pen-y-ffordd itself, out at Rhewl-fawr, or further out within the CH postcode area.
Where the scan says treatment will not help, you are not billed for a clean. You still pay that charge: someone travelled, did the diagnostic and gave you the advice.
The clean includes a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer coming back out to Pen-y-ffordd if the light reappears inside that time.

The vehicles we clean and the patch we take in near Pen-y-ffordd
The filter is done on the vehicle on all of them: private cars, vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant and construction machinery, agricultural vehicles. Nothing is taken anywhere.
The same run that puts our engineers on Maes Emlyn most weeks takes in Pen-y-ffordd, Rhewl-fawr, Glasdir and the spots beyond Trelogan. Even further out around Flintshire is even so worth ringing about — coverage runs UK-wide, and it is the calendar rather than the distance that decides between one day and the next.

What Pen-y-ffordd drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough alone?
- It might, provided you get it in time and limp mode has not set in. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it wants — not fifteen minutes flat to Spar and back.
- The visit runs how long?
- Plan on typically around 2 hours — heavily clogged filters sometimes need a second pass, which lengthens it.
- How much does it cost around Pen-y-ffordd?
- Opening from £299, with a charge for coming out that takes in the scan and advice on what to do next. Quoting is done by phone, since what you drive and where you are both shift the figure.
- Is it necessary for me to be around?
- You do not need to stand with it — the motor only needs somewhere to sit for a couple of hours. Come along if you would rather, and the regeneration is done as a supervised drive.
- When can someone come to Pen-y-ffordd?
- Depending on the diary, often same-day or next-day is typical. One phone call to 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what the CH area has open.
- Does the filter leave the vehicle?
- Not on the on-site service — it is done where it sits. We never lift filters off or fit them back on, in either direction.
- And if the light returns?
- Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Pen-y-ffordd.
