Old Balkello, Angus: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The filter is not automatically what is at fault, and that goes first. A number of faults put the very same light on the identical dash, which is why a visit starts with a check rather than with a clean.

- Amber light, motor even now driving normally — a long even run can still sort it on its own. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you book anything.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has now closed.
- Stop booking long drives and get it seen to if the cabin reeks of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.
Before the light, what the vehicle was warning you
The light is late news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have usually been building for a while:
- power dropping away, particularly pulling uphill
- you see the revs stop short of where they always went
- fuel use going worse
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- the cabin smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
The reason diesel particulate filters clog round Old Balkello
For a DPF, the worst motoring is the kind you get around an area such as Old Balkello. A regeneration wants long enough and heat, and gets neither: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on Old Whisky Road at the morning rush, not on five minutes to Lidl, and not on the run to Invergowrie. What should burn away remains.
The map does not help either. The M90 is under 25 miles from Old Balkello and Dundee is under 10 miles away, so unless something takes you out that way routinely, whole weeks slip past without the long unbroken run that might clear the filter on its own.
The stage a DPF regeneration can no longer happen
What limp mode amounts to is the motor protecting itself. Output is limited, the revs will not rise, and the regeneration the filter wants can no longer complete — which is the real catch, because a proper drive works by setting off that regeneration.
So the common advice to take it up the motorway is sound advice, until it is not. In limp mode you are the far side of that line: cleaning is what will work, not more miles.

Most drivers do not anticipate this detail: the filter stays put. The job takes place with the DPF even now fitted to the motor — on your driveway, in a work car park, wherever the car can wait for a while.
Nothing is cleaned until other faults are eliminated. That requires a scan first: live data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by weight, and a look over of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated components.
A cleaning fluid next is injected through the entry point on that vehicle, expanding inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never shift. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to need doing twice.

What a DPF clean will not cure
Only one fault is answered by cleaning: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:
- the wrong reading from a temperature sensor
- an EGR valve stuck open
- AdBlue system failures
- faulty glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever completes
- turbo problems, with oil getting into the filter
Which is why the check comes first. Where one of those proves the fault, you find out about it up front rather than once the money has left for good.
Two more worth knowing. Getting the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.
