What the car has been warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have normally been building for a while:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- worse fuel use
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
On its own, none of that is proof. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
