What the vehicle has been telling you
The light is last news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have generally been mounting for a while:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- you notice the revs never reach where they used to go
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
That is not conclusive alone. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
What chokes diesel particulate filters near Moorlands
For a DPF, the worst driving is the kind you meet around a residential suburb such as Moorlands. Run through an ordinary week: The Cathedral Catholic Primary School, Lancaster and home again, Melrose Street at a halt before half nine, a quick trip to K. F. Finding that out is the first check's job. If one of those is the fault, you hear about it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands altogether.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no fix. What gets searched for as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into service.
