Mere, Cheshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Mobile DPF cleaning comes to the car. The engineer arrives at your door in Mere and sets up. The diesel particulate filter is treated still on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration follows, and you end up with the filter you came with.

The visit takes typically around 2 hours, the clean opens from £299, and the figure is agreed on the phone before anyone travels.

The light is showing and the car is down on power — that is how we usually come across people, and roughly what this page covers.

Your DPF light is on — what now?

Not the DPF, necessarily. Opening thing to note. That light can follow several faults, not only one, so the visit starts with a check and not with treatment.

Second thing: how you drive it between now and then counts.

  • A long steady run may yet manage it, provided the light is amber and the vehicle goes as normal. Costs nothing at all, so try that before booking.
  • Vehicle already fallen into limp mode — that window has closed. A drive will not shift it now.
  • Stop planning long drives and get it looked at if the car smells of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.

What the motor has been showing you

The light is last news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been building for weeks:

  • power falling off, especially pulling uphill
  • revs that will not climb the way they used to
  • the fuel use is poorer
  • a stop/start that has silently bowed out
  • diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears

Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.

The explanation diesel particulate filters choke round Mere

For a DPF, the least kind use is the sort you find around a rural village such as Mere. Look at a normal week: Egerton Primary School and home, Ashley Road at a halt before the hour, a short hop to The Co-operative Food, a run to Knutsford. Not much there runs long enough or gets hot enough to complete a regeneration. The soot that should burn away collects instead.

Neither is far from Mere: under 3 miles to the M6, under 15 miles to Salford. Neither is on the way to anything most weeks, though, so the drive that would clear a filter simply never gets made.

DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode ends it

Limp mode is the motor looking after itself. A sustained drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is exactly what limp mode prevents: power held down, revs kept low, no regeneration available.

So the standard advice to run it up the motorway is sound advice, until it stops being. In limp mode you are past that point: cleaning is what will do it, not more road work.

The blocked filter cleaned after a warning light in Mere, Cheshire

Mobile DPF cleaning where the motor stands across Mere

Most drivers do not see coming this detail: the filter stays put. The job takes place with the DPF yet fitted to the vehicle — on your drive, in a work car park, any place the vehicle can sit for a couple of hours.

A check goes first — real-time data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by mass, and a review of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and related components, so other faults are ruled out before any of it is started.

Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never budge are loosened second, by a solution put through the entry point on that vehicle, which expands inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to need doing twice.

Next, a regeneration burns off everything the clean lifted. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Mere; if not, on the spot where the motor waits, with the real-time data read once done.

Then a second check, proving the change, resetting the warning light and listing anything still outstanding. Both read-outs are sent over, so the before and after figures are kept.

The faults a DPF clean cannot fix

Treatment answers one thing: a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:

  • temperature or pressure sensors showing a blockage that is not there
  • a failed EGR valve
  • the AdBlue system failing
  • worn glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever starts
  • oil coming through the filter from a faulty turbo

That is what the first check is for. Where one of those is the fault, you learn of it at the outset rather than once the money has left altogether.

DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is swapped: the filter you own is treated where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it hollowed out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth knowing.

What DPF cleaning runs to in Mere

Every visit attracts a call-out charge — coming out to you, making the booking, running the diagnostic and offering the advice. The clean itself opens from £299.

No single flat rate would be honest, so the number is agreed on the phone once we know the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. The car shifts it, and so does the address — Mere, Tatton Dale, or somewhere further out in the WA postcode area.

Cleaning that will not work is not treatment you pay for, and the check is what says so. What nonetheless stands is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the diagnostic was done and the advice was offered.

Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer heads back to Mere.

On-site DPF cleaning at a vehicle across Mere

Daz did a fantastic job, even completing the work in the dark, has been very helpful with explaining what needs to be done to make sure my vehicle doesn't fail.

Robert G.

Excellent service came to my home address was polite and explained the process then got on with the job.

John M.

Daz was very friendly and helpful. Although the issue with my car was a lot more than the DPF, he helped me understand the problem so I could make an informed decision on where to go/what to do next.

Where we reach round Mere, and what we clean

The filter is cleaned on the vehicle on all of them: private cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs, construction and plant machinery, agricultural machinery. Nothing is moved anywhere.

Engineers are along Ashley Road nearly every week, so Mere is seldom a detour, and the same run picks up Tatton Dale, Tabley Hill and the villages out past Bucklow Hill. It is the calendar, not the distance, that picks whether it is one day or the next, and coverage reaches UK-wide — so phone even from further out across Cheshire.

Things Mere drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Can I merely take it for a long drive?
It might, provided you spot it early and limp mode has not begun. That calls for motorway speed for a sustained run, rather than a short trip to The Co-operative Food.
Does the visit take long?
It is typically around 2 hours. A severely blocked filter can require a second clean, which adds to that.
How much does it come to around Mere?
Opening from £299, with a charge for coming out that takes in the check and advice on what to do next. Both the vehicle and where you are shift it, which is why quoting goes by phone.
Is it necessary for me to be present?
No. The car requires somewhere to wait for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. The regeneration can be done as a supervised drive if you would rather come along.
Coming to Mere — how soon?
You are offered often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is currently in the calendar. Ask 0303 330 1830 what is free across the WA area.
The filter — does it come off the motor?
On the on-site service, no: the filter is done in place. Lifting a filter off or fitting one back on come to anything work we do whichever way.
What if the light returns?
Aftercare comes inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Mere.
