Before the light, what the vehicle was warning you
By the time the light appears, things have usually been deteriorating for weeks. It is belated news:
- less power, especially pulling uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they used to go
- worse fuel consumption
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- the interior reeking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
None of that is conclusive on its own. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
