It could not be the DPF at all. That is the opening thing. That light can arise from plenty of faults, not only one, so the visit starts with a scan and not with a clean.

- Once the motor is in limp mode, motoring will not reach it. The window has gone.
- A diesel smell in there, or black smoke under acceleration, is the point to stop booking long drives and book it in.
What the vehicle has been warning you
The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been building for some time:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- fuel use turning worse
- without a word, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. The light with them suggests a loaded filter.
Why diesel particulate filters choke round Longparish
For a DPF, the worst motoring is the kind you find in a village such as Longparish. Not one bit of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration: the school run to Longparish Church of England Primary School, Mill Lane crawling at half eight, ten minutes to Co-op Food, the hop to Whitchurch (Hampshire). - a pressure sensor reporting a block that is not there
- an EGR valve held open
- the AdBlue system playing up
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration starting at all
- oil working through the filter from a failing turbo
That is what the first scan is for. Where one of those turns out to be the fault, you find out about it up front rather than once the money has left for good.
DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is swapped: the filter you own is treated where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it hollowed out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes unlawful. Two more things worth noting.
