The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have usually been growing for a while:
- less power, especially going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- the stop/start without a word packing in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
The reason diesel particulate filters choke near Llanfrechfa
