The light is late news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have usually been growing for a while:
- less power, especially climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull like they did
- the fuel economy is poorer
- a stop/start that has quietly given up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
