Before the light, what the car was telling you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been going wrong for a while. It is belated news:
- pulling uphill, the power drops away
- you notice the revs never reach where they always went
- the fuel use is worse
- the stop/start without a word packing in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
That is not proof on its own. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
