Hulme, Staffordshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With mobile DPF cleaning, we drive out to the motor. The engineer turns up at your place across Hulme and starts. The diesel particulate filter is cleared fitted to the motor, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you keep the filter you came with.

The visit takes typically around 2 hours, the clean opens from £299, and the figure is settled on the phone before anyone travels.

If the light is showing and the motor is low on power, this page is yours. That is how most people get to us.

DPF light on? What to do

Not the filter, necessarily. First thing to note. A check comes before all cleaning, because that same dashboard light has a number of likely faults behind it.

How the vehicle is run in the meantime makes a difference too.

  • Worth a shot before you book anything: amber light, motor driving fine, just one steady run, no cost.
  • A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has now shut.
  • Diesel smell in the cabin, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop planning long drives and get it looked at.

Before the light, what the motor was telling you

Late news, the light. The symptoms tend to grow for a while before it arrives:

  • less power, especially climbing uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not pull as before
  • worse fuel economy
  • a stop/start that has meekly given up
  • smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there

That is not conclusive by itself. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is there too.

The reason diesel particulate filters clog around Hulme

Hulme is a rural hamlet, and the driving that comes with one is the poorest sort for a DPF. None of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to Maple Court Academy, Hulme Lane crawling at half eight, a few minutes to Lidl, the hop to Longton. The soot load banks up rather than clearing.

The map does not oblige either. The M6 is under 10 miles from Hulme and Stoke-on-Trent is under 5 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way often, weeks go by without the sustained run that could clear the filter alone.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops

It is self-defence: that is all limp mode amounts to. Pulling power is capped, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter needs can not run — which is the real catch, because a proper drive works by setting off that regeneration.

So the common advice to take it up the motorway is sound advice, until the day it is not. The far side of that stage — limp mode — driving will not do it, and the filter requires a clean.

DPF cleaning at the vehicle in Hulme

On your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the motor can sit for a while: the job takes place with the filter yet fitted on, which is the part most people do not anticipate.

First a scan. Live ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a mass, the sensors, the glow plugs, the connected hardware — all of it read before any of it is started.

A solution next is injected through the entry point on that car, opening out inside the filter to loosen soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never move. Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to take doing twice.

What the clean has loosened is then driven off by a regeneration. Either it runs as a monitored drive out of Hulme, with you along, or it goes where the car waits and the real-time data is verified after.

A second check verifies the change, puts out the warning light and notes anything still showing. Both read-outs are emailed, so you have the before and after figures to hand.

Where treatment is not the fix

Only one fault is cured by a clean: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does little for:

  • a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a blockage that is not there
  • the EGR valve jammed open
  • an AdBlue system fault
  • injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration starting whatsoever
  • oil coming through the filter from a faulty turbo

The first diagnostic is there for precisely that. Transpiring to be one of them means learning it before work starts, not after settling up for it.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal, so that is no solution. What gets looked up as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your existing filter is treated in place and goes back into use.

DPF cleaning charges across Hulme

The cleaning starts from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that follows.

The price is settled on the phone, once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. No flat rate could be honest. Whereabouts you are counts as much as what you run: Hulme itself, Ash Bank next door, or further out within the ST postcode area.

If the diagnostic rules treatment out, there is not a penny to pay for it. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone travelled, carried out the scan and gave you the advice.

If the light reappears inside that window, an engineer heads back out to Hulme — the clean includes a 30-day warranty covering aftercare.

Daz was fantastic. Sussed out the problem with my cars engine. Was professional and genuine, my car didn't have a blocked DPD so no clean needed. Excellent service.

The vehicles we clean and the ground we cover round Hulme

A single call-out service covers cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery and farm vehicles, and on every one the filter is done in place rather than taken anywhere.

Our engineers are along Hulme Lane most weeks, so Hulme is hardly ever a detour, and the same run takes in Ash Bank, Adderley Green and the villages out past Cookshill. Coverage reaches UK-wide, so even further out through Staffordshire is even so worth a call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

What Hulme drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Can I simply take it for a long drive?
Sometimes, if you catch it early enough and the motor has not slipped into limp mode. A steady run at motorway speed is what it wants — not five minutes flat to Lidl and back.
Broadly how long does it last?
It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily loaded filter can need a second clean, which extends that.
How much does it come to across Hulme?
A clean starts from £299, and the call-out charge on top pays for the visit, the check and the advice. The vehicle and your address both move the figure, so we quote on the phone.
Do I have to be present?
A spot for the vehicle to sit, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. Travel along if you would rather, and the regeneration is done as a monitored drive.
Can someone come to Hulme soon?
You are offered often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is already in the schedule. Ask 0303 330 1830 what is open across the ST area.
Is the filter taken off the motor?
Done where it stands, on this service, so no. Lifting a filter off or bolting one back on come to anything something we do whichever way.
What if the light reappears?
Aftercare falls inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer coming back to Hulme.
