What the vehicle has been showing you
Late news, the light. The symptoms generally build for a while before it arrives:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they used to
- fuel consumption getting worse
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
That is not proof by itself. The light beside them indicates a full filter.
The reason diesel particulate filters clog round Hill Top

Two things more worth knowing. Leaving the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a functioning DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
