By the time the light arrives, things have normally been slipping for a while. It is last news:

- the revs no longer rise the way they always did
- the fuel economy is worse
- silently, the stop/start gives up
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
None of that is evidence alone. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
