Signs the car has been showing you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been going wrong for a while. It is belated news:
- power dropping away, especially climbing uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- the fuel use is down
- without a word, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not conclusive by itself. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is blocked.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Gell
Being a rural hamlet, Gell generates precisely the motoring a DPF copes with the poorest. A regeneration needs long enough and heat, and sees neither: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on A548 at the morning rush, not on a few minutes to Aldi, and not on the run to Tal-Y-Cafn. DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is swapped: the filter you have is cleared where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it cut out a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes unlawful. Two more things worth noting.
