The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have usually been building for some time:

- economy that is worse than before
- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not proof by itself. The light alongside them indicates a loaded filter.
