Dun, Angus: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Mobile DPF cleaning goes to the motor. The fitter arrives at your address over in Dun and gets to work. The diesel particulate filter is cleared on the car, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you end up with the filter you arrived with.

Nobody travels until the price is fixed over the phone. The visit runs typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.

The light is on already and the vehicle is down on power — that is how we normally find people, and what this page is about.

What to do when the DPF light shows

It might not be the unit whatsoever. That is the opening thing. A scan happens before any work, because that same dash light has several candidate faults behind it.

The use you manage in the meantime counts. That is the other thing.

  • A long constant run may yet manage it, provided the light is amber and the motor runs normally. Costs nothing, so try that before calling.
  • Once the motor is in limp mode, driving will not reach it. The window has gone.
  • Get it checked rather than using it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.

Before the light, what the car was telling you

Last news, the light. The symptoms generally grow for weeks before it appears:

  • climbing uphill, the power tails off
  • an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
  • fuel economy getting worse
  • a stop/start that has meekly packed in
  • a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration

Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.

What clogs diesel particulate filters near Dun

The day-to-day driving that belongs to an area like Dun is the least kind kind for a DPF. None of it lasts long enough or is hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, A935 crawling at half past eight, ten minutes to Aldi, the dash to Montrose. What should burn off stays behind.

The M90 stands under 50 miles from Dun, Dundee under 25 miles out, and unless something carries you out that way regularly, entire weeks go by without the sustained run that scours a DPF. Geography does not oblige.

Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration

Limp mode is the vehicle defending itself. With pulling power capped and the revs pinned, the regeneration the filter needs cannot happen at all. That matters, because starting one is exactly what a long run does.

Taking it up the motorway is the common advice, and it works up to a point. In limp mode you are beyond that point: a clean is what will help, not more road work.

The blocked filter treated after a warning light in Dun, Angus

On-site DPF cleaning where the motor stands round Dun

Nothing is taken from the motor. That surprises people. The DPF remains fixed where it is and the work happens around it, on a drive, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for a couple of hours.

First a diagnostic. Real-time ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a mass, the sensor readings, the glow plugs, the associated components — all of it read before anything is touched.

Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never budge are freed second, by a cleaning solution put through the access port on that vehicle, which expands inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to take doing twice.

What the clean has freed is then cleared by a regeneration. That is a monitored drive out of Dun if you are present, or a static regeneration where the motor stands, with the live data read afterwards.

Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change proven, the light cleared, anything still open noted. Both sets of figures reach you by email, so the numbers are on record.

The failures a DPF clean cannot answer

Only one fault is fixed by treatment: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:

  • pressure or temperature sensors reporting a blockage that is not there
  • the EGR valve jammed open
  • an AdBlue system failure
  • injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration starting at all
  • a turbo pushing oil through the filter

The first check is there for exactly that. You are warned before all work gets going, not after you have settled up, if it turns out to be one of those.

Cutting the filter out is not a fix: without a working DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the term people type in, though nothing is replaced — your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use. Two more worth knowing.

Costs for DPF cleaning in Dun

The clean starts from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that goes with it.

Naming a flat rate would not be truthful. We settle it on the phone, once the vehicle and its expected needs are established. Two separate things change it: what you run, and where you are — Dun itself, out at Bridge of Dun, or further out in the DD postcode area.

If the diagnostic writes a clean out, there is nothing to pay for it. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have happened, the call-out charge even so stands.

Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer comes back to Dun.

Where we travel round Dun, and what we clean

Private cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery, agricultural vehicles — a single on-site service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is cleaned on the vehicle rather than moved anywhere.

The same round that puts engineers on A935 most weeks covers Dun, Bridge of Dun, Barnhead and the villages beyond Hillside. Even further out around Angus is even so worth phoning about — coverage is UK-wide, and it is the schedule rather than the distance that decides between today and tomorrow.

Questions Dun drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Will a long drive sort it?
Sometimes, if you get it early and the car has not slipped into limp mode. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it needs — not five minutes or so to Aldi and back.
How long does the visit take?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a heavily loaded filter can take cleaning twice, which adds time.
In Dun, what does it run to?
The call-out charge takes in the visit, the scan and the advice; the clean itself opens from £299. Quoting is done by phone, since what you own and where you sit both shift the number.
Is it essential for me to be there?
Space for the car to sit, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. The regeneration can be done as a monitored drive if you would sooner come along.
Getting to Dun — how soon?
It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is now in the schedule. Ring 0303 330 1830 and we will say to you what is free across the DD area.
The filter — does it leave the vehicle?
Not on the call-out service — it is done where it stands. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
What if the light reappears?
Aftercare falls inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Dun.
