What the vehicle has been showing you
Symptoms have normally been growing for a while before the light ever shows. Late news, in other words:
- less power, above all climbing uphill
- you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
- worse fuel use
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
On its own, none of that is conclusive. Alongside the light beside them, the filter is a fair guess.
