The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been building for weeks:
- less power, particularly climbing uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- consumption that is worse than it used to be
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
None of that is conclusive alone. The light beside them points at a full filter.

For a DPF, the least kind use is the sort you get in a village such as Cwmavon. Finding that out is the first check's whole job. If one of those turns out to be the fault, you find out about it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands already.
Hollowing the filter out is not a fix: without a working DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the phrase people look up, though nothing is swapped — your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
