What the vehicle has been warning you
By the time the light shows, things have usually been going wrong for some time. It is late news:
- less power, especially going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull like they did
- economy that is worse than it used to be
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
None of that is evidence on its own. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Craigo
