Before the light, what the motor was warning you
By the time the light arrives, things have generally been slipping for weeks. It is late news:
- going uphill, the power falls off
- revs that will not rise the way they used to
- worse fuel use
- stop/start quietly bowing out
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
None of that is evidence on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Clabby
