The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been building for a while:
- less power, especially climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- the fuel use is poorer
- silently, the stop/start bows out
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears
Alone, none of that is evidence. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.

Two more worth knowing. Having the filter hollowed out is not a fix — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your original filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.
