By the time the light shows, things have normally been going wrong for some time. It is late news:
- power tailing off, particularly climbing uphill

- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Catterall
