Carnoustie, Angus: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With on-site DPF cleaning, we come to the motor. A fitter comes at your address over in Carnoustie, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the car, performs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you arrived with.
Nobody leaves until the price is settled over the phone. The visit runs typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.
Most owners find us with the light showing, and the car down on power. That is exactly what this page is written for.
The DPF light is on. What now?
It might not be the unit in the end. That is the first thing. That light can arise from plenty of faults, not merely one, so the visit opens with a diagnostic and not with treatment.
The motoring you get in the meantime matters. That is the second thing.
- A long constant run may still do it, provided the light is amber and the vehicle runs normally. Costs nothing, so attempt that before calling.
- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has by then shut.
- Get it looked at rather than using it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
The car has been warning you already
By the time the light appears, things have usually been deteriorating for a while. It is last news:
- less power, particularly going uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they once did
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- quietly, the stop/start packs in
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
By itself, none of that is conclusive. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Carnoustie
For a DPF, the least kind driving is the sort you get across a coastal town such as Carnoustie. A regeneration takes the time and heat, and has neither: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on High Street at the morning rush, not on ten minutes to Co-op Food, and not on the dash to the nearest station. The soot load banks up rather than clearing.
The map does not help either. The M90 is under 50 miles from Carnoustie and Dundee is under 15 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way often, weeks go by without the long unbroken run that could scour the filter by itself.
Why limp mode stops a DPF regeneration
Limp mode is the vehicle protecting itself. Output is held down, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter needs can not run — which is the whole difficulty, because a proper drive works by triggering that regeneration.
Running it up the motorway is the common advice, and it works right up to a point. Once the car is in limp mode you are the far side of that stage, and the filter requires treatment rather than road work.
The car stays put for mobile DPF cleaning round Carnoustie
Nothing is taken from the vehicle. That surprises people. The DPF stays fitted where it is and the work is done around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, any place it can stand for a couple of hours.
The ECU is interrogated first, reporting soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a look over of sensor readings, glow plugs and connected parts, so nothing is started while another fault is still open.
Soot and ash that a regeneration on its own will never shift are freed second, by a solution put through the entry point on that car, which expands inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to take doing twice.
What the clean has lifted is then driven off by a regeneration. That is a monitored drive out of Carnoustie if you are there, or a static regeneration where the car stands, with the live data checked once done.
Both read-outs are sent by email, so the figures from either end are on record. The second check is what confirms the change, resets the light and lists whatever is still showing.
What a DPF clean will not fix
Only one fault is answered by a clean: the filter clogged with ash and soot. It does little for:
- the wrong figure from a temperature or pressure sensor
- the EGR valve stuck open
- AdBlue system problems
- glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration starting in the first place
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
That is what the first scan is for. If it proves to be one of those, you are told before any work gets going rather than after you have paid a penny.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter gutted fails its MOT, and driving it is illegal, so that is no solution. What gets typed in as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your own filter is cleared in place and goes back into service.
DPF cleaning costs across Carnoustie
Any visit carries a call-out charge — travelling to you, taking the booking, running the check and giving the advice. The clean itself begins from £299.
The number is settled on the phone, once we have the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. No flat rate could be honest. What you run and where you are both change it: Carnoustie itself, out at Panbride, or further out in the DD postcode area.
Where the scan says cleaning will not do it, you are not billed for treatment. What still applies is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the scan was run and the advice was passed on.
A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer coming back out to Carnoustie if the light reappears inside the window.
Your fitter, Zac, came at the agreed time and did the work very efficiently outside our house. He explained everything fully and went with me to test drive the car to make sure everything was rectified. Very happy with everything. 10/10.
A friendly and professional service, I was particularly impressed with the stress placed on understanding the way in which the exhaust emission control system works and the importance of regularly topping up the AdBlue tank.
The engineer Andrea's was very efficient. Nothing was a problem. I don't think my van has driven so well since I have had it. Very pleased. Thank you.
What we clean, and how far we go around Carnoustie
Private cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery, agricultural vehicles — a single call-out service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is treated on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.
Carnoustie is seldom a special trip: engineers are along High Street week in week out, and the same run takes in Panbride, Muirdrum and the villages out past Barry. Ring anyway from even further out around Angus. Coverage reaches UK-wide, and the slot you are offered comes down to the diary rather than how far away you are.

Things Carnoustie drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough by itself?
- Sometimes, if you get it early and the motor has not slipped into limp mode. Ten minutes to Co-op Food and back will not do it; motorway speed, kept for a stretch, will.
- Does the visit run long?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a heavily clogged filter can require cleaning twice, which takes longer.
- How much does it come to around Carnoustie?
- The call-out charge takes in the visit, the check and the advice; the clean itself starts from £299. The vehicle and your address both shift the number, so we quote on the phone.
- Have I need to be around?
- The motor requires a spot for two hours or so. You need not be in it. Preferring to be there is fine: the regeneration then runs out on the open road, monitored.
- Can someone get to Carnoustie soon?
- You are offered often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is currently in the diary. Call 0303 330 1830 and we will tell you what is free across the DD area.
- Is the filter lifted off the car?
- Not on the call-out service — it is cleaned where it is. That work — a filter off, a filter back on — is not something we do.
- Suppose the light returns?
- An engineer comes back out to Carnoustie — the 30-day warranty takes in aftercare.
