Before the light, what the car was telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have usually been mounting for a while:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- revs that will not rise the way they once did
- worse fuel economy
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
Alone, none of that is proof. Next to the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
