What the vehicle has been showing you
Symptoms have normally been growing for some time before the light ever arrives. Late news, in other words:
- dropping away on power, particularly uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they used to
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not proof alone. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round California
California is a rural hamlet, and the day-to-day driving that goes with one is the worst sort for a DPF. The ECU is taken first, reporting soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a check of sensor feeds, glow plugs and related components, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.
Then the treatment. A solution is injected through the access point on that car and opens out inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never budge. Badly loaded filters sometimes take a second pass.
Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has freed. That is a monitored drive out of California if you are present, or a static regeneration where the car sits, with the live data verified once done.

The problems a DPF clean cannot fix
One thing is what cleaning fixes — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- sensors, temperature or pressure, reporting a blockage that is not real
- EGR valves that stick open
- a problem in the AdBlue system
- failed glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever completes
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
The first scan is there for just that. When it proves to be one of those, you are let know before any work gets going rather than after you have handed over anything.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out fails its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no fix. What gets searched for as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your own filter is cleared in place and goes back into use.
