First thing: it is not automatically the filter. A number of faults put the same light on the same dashboard, which is why a visit begins with a scan rather than with treatment.
It matters what you do with the vehicle between now and the visit.
- A long constant run may even now do it, provided the light is amber and the motor drives normally. Costs nothing, so attempt that before ringing.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not shift it. The window has shut.
- Get it looked at rather than using it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
Signs the car has been sending you
Symptoms have normally been growing for some time before the light so much as arrives. Belated news, in other words:
- falling off on power, particularly uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
- the fuel consumption is down
- stop/start silently bowing out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. The light beside them suggests a full filter.
The cause diesel particulate filters choke around Broadgate
For a DPF, the worst driving is the sort you meet in a residential suburb such as Broadgate.
