Signs the car has been sending you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been growing for a while:
- power falling off, particularly climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as they should
- economy that is worse than before
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
On its own, none of that is proof. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is blocked.
