By the time the light appears, things have usually been deteriorating for some time. It is late news:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- fuel use turning worse
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
None of that is evidence alone. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.

- turbo trouble, with oil reaching the filter
