The light is late news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have usually been mounting for a while:
- power dropping away, above all pulling uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they always did
- fuel use going worse
- a stop/start that has silently given up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the box
By itself, none of that is proof. It is a fair guess the filter is full once the light is on as well.
Why diesel particulate filters clog around Woolley
