The light is last news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been mounting for weeks:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did
- the fuel use is worse
- the stop/start silently bowing out
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
That is not proof by itself. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.
The cause diesel particulate filters block around Wix
Wix is a coastal village, and the day-to-day driving that goes with one is the worst sort for a DPF. - the turbo passing oil into the filter
That is what the first scan is for. When one of those proves the fault, you learn of it in advance rather than once the money has changed hands for good.
A couple more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a functioning DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
