Before the light, what the motor was telling you
The light is last news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been growing for weeks:
- power dropping away, above all pulling uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they once did
- economy that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has quietly given up
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
None of that is proof by itself. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is there too.
