Symptoms have usually been building for some time before the light even arrives. Late news, in other words:
- less power, above all going uphill
- you find the revs fall short of where they always went

- stop/start without a word bowing out
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
None of that is proof on its own. The light alongside them suggests a blocked filter.
The reason diesel particulate filters clog round Whitmore
