Before the light, what the motor was showing you
Symptoms have generally been building for a while before the light even appears. Belated news, in other words:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- the revs no longer climb the way they always did
- fuel economy getting worse
- quietly, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gears
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair bet.
