Westwick, Cambridgeshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Cleaning the DPF is done at the motor, not at a body shop. No garage, no filter going anywhere. A technician travels to your door over in Westwick, treats the diesel particulate filter in place, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.
The visit lasts typically around 2 hours, the clean opens from £299, and the number is agreed by the phone before anyone sets off.
Written for the position most owners are in: the light showing, the motor starved for power, and the job still to book.
DPF light on? What to do
Not the unit, necessarily. First thing to get straight. Cleaning is not where a visit begins. A diagnostic is — several faults register as the same signal.
Second thing: how you drive it between now and then counts.
- A long steady run may still manage it, provided the light is amber and the vehicle drives normally. Costs nothing at all, so have a go at that before booking.
- Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not touch it. The window has gone.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it looked at.
What the car has been telling you
By the time the light arrives, things have normally been deteriorating for some time. It is late news:
- less power, above all going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- the fuel use is down
- the stop/start quietly packing in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near Westwick
Being a rural hamlet, Westwick produces exactly the use a DPF manages the poorest. Not one bit of it runs long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to Oakington CofE Primary School, Station Road barely moving at half past eight, five minutes to Co-op Food, the dash to Cambridge North. The unburnt soot builds up rather than burning away.
Except when you have a standing need to head out to the M11, under 3 miles from Westwick, or over to Cambridge under 5 miles away, entire weeks pass without a long steady run. Geography is no help.
DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode kills it
The motor is defending itself, which is what limp mode amounts to. With pulling power capped and the revs kept low, the regeneration the filter wants cannot happen at all. That counts, because setting off one is precisely what a sustained run does.
The common advice — run it up the motorway — is sound, until it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are beyond that line, and the filter needs a clean rather than driving.
DPF cleaning at the car in Westwick
On your front, in a work car park, any place the vehicle can stand for a few hours: the job takes place with the filter still fitted on, which is the bit most owners do not see coming.
First a scan. Running ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a mass, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the connected components — all of it read before anything is cleaned.
Then the cleaning. A cleaning solution is fed in through the entry point on that motor and expands inside the filter, freeing the soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never budge. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to need doing twice.
A regeneration is next, driving off what the clean has loosened. That is a monitored drive out of Westwick if you are along, or a static regeneration where the vehicle sits, with the real-time data read after.
A second check verifies the change, resets the warning light and notes anything still showing. Both read-outs are emailed over, so you keep the before and after figures recorded.
Where treatment is not the fix
Cleaning cures one thing: a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- a pressure sensor flagging a blockage that is not there
- a jammed EGR valve
- AdBlue system problems
- injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration starting at all
- the turbo passing oil into the filter
Finding that out is the first diagnostic's job. You are let know before all work begins, not after you have paid, where it turns out to be one of those.
A couple more worth bearing in mind. Getting the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a working DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is treated in place and put back into use.
The figure for DPF cleaning across Westwick
A call-out charge holds whatever follows, and pays for the visit, the booking fee, the diagnostic and the advice offered. Treatment itself opens from £299.
Once we are told what you drive, and about what the filter will need, the number gets agreed over phone. A single price for everyone would not be honest. What you run and where you are both change it: Westwick itself, across at Oakington, or farther out across the CB postcode area.
Where the diagnostic says a clean will not do it, you are not charged for treatment. What still stands is the call-out charge, since the visit was made, the scan was carried out and the advice was offered.
Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer comes back to Westwick.

Where we travel round Westwick, and what we clean
A single call-out service spans cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant and construction machinery and agricultural machinery, and on every one the filter is done on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.
Most weeks there is already someone on Station Road, so Westwick rarely means a detour, and Oakington, Northstowe and the spots past Longstanton come with it. Coverage is UK-wide, so further out across Cambridgeshire is nonetheless worth a ring, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

What Westwick drivers wonder about DPF cleaning
- Can I merely take it for a long drive?
- Sometimes, if you get it early enough and the motor has not slipped into limp mode. Fifteen minutes to Co-op Food and back will not do it; motorway speed, sustained for a while, will.
- Does the visit run long?
- Expect typically around 2 hours — severely loaded filters sometimes take a second pass, which adds to it.
- In Westwick, what does it run to?
- Cleaning opens from £299, and the call-out charge on top covers the visit, the check and the advice. The vehicle and your address both change the price, so we price on the phone.
- Is it needed for me to be around?
- A spot for the vehicle to sit, for a couple of hours, is all that is wanted. Not you. Wanting to be there is no problem: the regeneration then goes out on the open road, monitored.
- How soon can someone come to Westwick?
- You are in for often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is currently in the diary. One ring to 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what the CB area has available.
- The filter — does it come off the vehicle?
- Treated where it stands, on this service, so no. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not work we do.
- And if the light returns?
- The 30-day warranty includes aftercare, including an engineer coming back to Westwick.
