Westhouses, Derbyshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Sorting the DPF is done at the motor, not at a body shop. Your motor isn't taken off and the filter doesn't leave it. A fitter comes at your place over in Westhouses, clears the diesel particulate filter fitted to the vehicle and carries out a DPF regeneration.

You'll be given a number by phone before anyone goes, the clean starting from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.

If the light is showing and the vehicle is low on power, this page is for you. That is how most people end up here.

The DPF light is on. What now?

The DPF is not necessarily what is to blame, and that goes first. That light can follow a number of faults, not just one, so the visit starts with a diagnostic and not with cleaning.

It tells what you manage with the motor between now and the visit.

  • Amber light, car even now driving as normal — a long steady run can yet clear it alone. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you call anything.
  • Once the vehicle is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has closed.
  • A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under acceleration, is the stage to stop planning long drives and book it in.

What the vehicle has been telling you

The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been building for weeks:

  • climbing uphill, the power tails off
  • an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
  • worse fuel consumption
  • stop/start without a word giving up
  • the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you press on

Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. The light beside them suggests a full filter.

Why diesel particulate filters choke near Westhouses

Westhouses is a village, and the motoring that goes with one is the poorest sort for a DPF. Look at an ordinary week: Westhouses Primary School and home, Church Close at a crawl before the hour, a short hop to South Normanton's Co-op, a hop to Alfreton. Nothing there goes on long enough or runs hot enough to see through a regeneration. Soot that should burn off collects instead.

Neither is far from Westhouses: under 3 miles to the M1, under 15 miles to Derby. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the drive that would empty a filter simply never happens.

DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode ends it

It is self-preservation: that is all limp mode is. With power limited and the revs kept low, the regeneration the filter requires can never run at all. That tells, because starting one is precisely what a motorway run does.

Running it up the motorway is the standard advice, and it stands right up to a line. In limp mode you are past that point: treatment is what will help, not more driving.

Call-out DPF cleaning where the motor stands across Westhouses

On your driveway, in a work car park, wherever the car can stand for a while: the job is done with the filter even now fixed on, which is the detail most people do not anticipate.

The ECU is interrogated first, giving soot load by percent and by mass, along with a check of sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated components, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still open.

Then comes the clean itself: cleaning fluid in through the vehicle's own access point, opening out inside the filter and lifting what a regeneration never can. Where the filter is severely clogged, allow for a second pass.

Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean lifted. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Westhouses; if not, in place where the vehicle stands, with the live data checked after.

Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change verified, the light put out, anything still outstanding logged. Both sets of figures come to you by email, so the numbers are recorded.

The failures a DPF clean cannot cure

A filter choked with soot and ash is the one thing a clean cures. It will not reach:

  • sensors, pressure, flagging a blockage that is not real
  • a jammed EGR valve
  • an AdBlue system fault
  • glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration running in the first place
  • oil passing through the filter from a worn turbo

That is what the first check is for. Turning out to be one of them means hearing it before the work begins, not after settling up anything.

DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is swapped: the filter you own is treated where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it hollowed out a solution, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth knowing.

Costs for DPF cleaning in Westhouses

The clean opens from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the diagnostic and the advice that follows.

Once we have what you own, and about what the filter will need, the figure gets fixed on the phone. A single price for all would not be honest. The place you are tells as much as what you own: Westhouses itself, Blackwell close by, or otherwise out across the DE postcode area.

Where the diagnostic says a clean will not work, you are not charged for cleaning. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone turned up, carried out the diagnostic and passed on you the advice.

Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer heads back to Westhouses.

Vehicles we clean, and where we travel around Westhouses

The filter is treated on the vehicle on all of them: cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery, agricultural machinery. Nothing is carried anywhere.

Westhouses is seldom a special trip: our engineers are out on Church Close most weeks, and the same run picks up Blackwell, Stonebroom and the places out past South Normanton. Further out across Derbyshire is even so worth a call — coverage reaches UK-wide, and it is the diary rather than the distance that settles between today and tomorrow.

The patch around Westhouses

Westhouses is a village in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 109 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Westhouses lies approximately 14 miles north of Derby and 123 miles north of London, near the villages of Blackwell and Stonebroom. Westhouses has a population of around 829 residents, living in a mix of old and new properties, including those on the Acre Ridge Estate. Westhouses is part of the East Midlands region, with the River Amber flowing nearby.

What Westhouses drivers wonder about DPF cleaning

Can I just take it for a long drive?
Early enough, and with the motor out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. That calls for motorway speed for a long run, rather than a quick trip to South Normanton's Co-op.
How long does the visit last?
It is typically around 2 hours. A badly clogged filter can need a second clean, which adds to that.
In Westhouses, what does it cost?
Treatment starts from £299, and the call-out charge on top takes in the visit, the scan and the advice. The vehicle and your address both shift the figure, so we quote on the phone.
Do I have to be there?
No. The car requires space to stand for a couple of hours; you need not stand with it. Travel along if you like, and the regeneration is done as a supervised drive.
How soon can someone travel to Westhouses?
That depends on the diary, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 and we will say to you what is free across the DE area.
Will the filter be removed?
On the mobile service, no: the filter is treated in place. Taking a filter off or fitting one back on come to anything a job we do either way.
The light reappears — then what?
An engineer comes back out to Westhouses — the 30-day warranty takes in aftercare.
