Signs the car has been sending you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been deteriorating for a while. It is belated news:
- power dropping away, especially going uphill
- you notice the revs never reach where they always went
- worse fuel use
- stop/start silently packing in
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
