By the time the light shows, things have normally been deteriorating for some time. It is belated news:
- power falling off, above all climbing uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- worse fuel economy
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
None of that is proof alone. Alongside the light with them, the filter is a fair bet.

Two more worth bearing in mind. Getting the filter cut out is not a fix — a vehicle without a working DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
