Way Head, Cambridgeshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The motor sits in place — call-out DPF cleaning comes to it. Your car isn't taken anywhere and the filter will not leave it. A technician arrives at your place over in Way Head, cleans the diesel particulate filter still on the motor and performs a DPF regeneration.

Nobody travels until the figure is settled on the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.

Written for the state most owners are in: the light already on, the vehicle short for power, and the visit still to arrange.

Your DPF light is lit — what then?

The unit is not always what is to blame, and that goes first. That light can come from a number of faults, not just one, so the visit starts with a check and not with a clean.

It matters what you get with the motor between now and the booking.

  • Amber light, car still driving as normal — a long steady run can even now clear it on its own. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you book anything.
  • Car already dropped into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not touch it now.
  • A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under acceleration, is the stage to stop arranging long drives and ring.

Before the light, what the motor was telling you

The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been mounting for a while:

  • power falling off, particularly climbing uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not pull as they should
  • the fuel use is poorer
  • stop/start silently giving up
  • the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away

That is not evidence by itself. The light with them points at a loaded filter.

Why diesel particulate filters block around Way Head

Way Head is a rural hamlet, and the day-to-day driving that belongs to one is the worst type for a DPF. The school run to Downham Feoffees Primary Academy, Downham Hythe Drove at a standstill at half eight, five minutes to Waitrose, the run to Ely — none of it runs long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. The unburnt soot builds up rather than burning away.

Unless you have a standing cause to get out to the M11, under 15 miles from Way Head, or over to Ely under 5 miles away, entire weeks go by without a long unbroken run. Geography is against you.

DPF regeneration, and the stage limp mode kills it

What limp mode amounts to is the car looking after itself. A proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is exactly what limp mode rules out: power capped, revs held down, no regeneration on offer.

The usual advice — run it up the motorway — is sensible, right until it is not. The filter wants cleaning rather than more driving once the car has gone into limp mode.

The clogged filter cleaned after a warning light across Way Head, Cambridgeshire

Where the vehicle stands is where the DPF is cleaned across Way Head

On your drive, in a work car park, wherever the car can stand for a couple of hours: the job takes place with the filter even now fitted on, which is the bit most people do not expect.

First a scan. Real-time ECU data, the soot load as a percentage and as a weight, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the connected parts — all of it read before any of it is started.

Then the treatment. A cleaning solution is injected through the access point on that car and expands inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never budge. Severely clogged filters sometimes require a second pass.

Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has freed. Ride along with the car and it becomes a monitored drive out of Way Head. Park it and the regeneration is done in place, with real-time data read once it is done.

Both reports come through by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second scan is what proves the change, resets the light and logs whatever is still open.

What a DPF clean will not fix

Treatment fixes one thing: a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:

  • the wrong reading from a temperature sensor
  • an EGR valve held open
  • an AdBlue system failure
  • worn glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever runs
  • the turbo putting oil into the filter

Which is why the scan happens first. You are let know before any work begins, not after you have paid, if it turns out to be one of those.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no remedy. What gets typed in as DPF renewal swaps nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into service.

DPF cleaning charges in Way Head

A call-out charge stands whatever happens, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the diagnostic and the advice passed on. Cleaning itself starts from £299.

Once we know what you own, and broadly what the filter will need, the number gets agreed by phone. A single price for all would not be truthful. The car shifts it, and so does the address — Way Head, Coveney, or a spot further out in the CB postcode area.

If the diagnostic writes treatment out, there is nothing to pay for it. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have been done, the call-out charge still stands.

Aftercare is covered by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer returns to Way Head.

Dan and trainee Sam came along sorted out the car, got it from trapped on the drive to back on the road in under 1hr and 30 mins. Also highlighted some issues that needed fixing unrelated to the initial problem and gave some after care advice!

Engineer very polite sorted problem now van runs like a F1 car will recommend to anyone with a dpf problem.

The technician Zoltan provided excellent service when he came to clean my filter, he answered any questions I had about the procedure and kept me informed as the job progressed, I would highly recommend dpf fixer.

Vehicles we clean, and where we reach around Way Head

Whatever it is — estate, van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, agricultural vehicle — the one call-out service stands, and the filter never leaves it.

Way Head is seldom a special trip: engineers are out on Downham Hythe Drove nearly every week, and the same run covers Coveney, Welches Dam and the villages out past Wardy Hill. Phone anyway from even further out across Cambridgeshire. Coverage runs UK-wide, and the date you get depends on the calendar rather than how far away you are.

What Way Head drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Does a long run shift it?
It might, provided you spot it early and limp mode has not set in. It wants a sustained run at motorway speed, not five minutes flat to Waitrose and back.
How long does the visit run?
It is typically around 2 hours. A severely blocked filter can need a second clean, which lengthens that.
Cost across Way Head — what is it?
It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the check and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are move it, which is why quoting is done by phone.
Do I have to be present?
Nobody expects you to stand with it — the motor only wants somewhere to sit for a couple of hours. Choosing to be there is no problem: the regeneration then is done out on the open road, monitored.
How soon can someone come to Way Head?
Depending on the diary, often same-day or next-day is usual. Ring 0303 330 1830 and we will say to you what is open across the CB area.
Will the filter be taken off?
Done where it sits, on this service, so no. And neither does getting a filter off nor putting one back on is work we do.
The light comes back — then what?
An engineer heads back out to Way Head — the 30-day warranty includes aftercare.
