- Amber light, car still driving normally — a long even run can yet shift it alone. Costs nothing, and worth trying before you book anything.
- Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has gone.
- Get it checked rather than running it — diesel in the car, or smoke on the throttle, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
What the car has been warning you
By the time the light arrives, things have normally been deteriorating for weeks. It is last news:
- less power, particularly going uphill
- you find the revs never reach where they once went
- the fuel consumption is worse
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell inside
That is not conclusive alone. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
The cause diesel particulate filters clog near Waterloo

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no fix. What gets looked up as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your existing filter is treated in place and goes back into service.
