Second thing: how you handle it between now and then makes a difference.
- Amber light, vehicle even now driving as normal — a long constant run can still shift it on its own. Costs nothing, and worth attempting before you call anything.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has by then shut.
- A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under the throttle, is the moment to stop arranging long drives and ring.
Before the light, what the car was showing you
The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been growing for some time:
- power falling off, above all pulling uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they always did
- the fuel use is down
- stop/start without a word giving up
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. The light alongside them indicates a full filter.
Why diesel particulate filters clog around Warren Row
